CONNEMARA is the name of the south section of our main building. It contains the cafeteria, Media Center, computer lab, resource room, conference room, the teacher's lounge, art and music rooms, as well as intermediate grade classrooms. Connemara is named after the Connemara Farm in North Carolina where Carl Sandburg lived from 1945 until he died in 1967.

PHIZZOG is the name of the northern section of our main building. Connemara and Phizzog are connected by our main office. Phizzog is named after a poem written by Carl Sandburg. Phizzog is derived from the word physiognomy, the art of discovering temperament and character from outward appearance.

ROOTABAGA is the building on the hill northeast of Connemara. It was named for the children's classic Rootabaga Stories.

KIVA is a Pueblo Indian word for a ceremonial structure that is usually round and partly underground. We use this word to describe the meeting places in our buildings.

About Our School

Carl Sandburg Elementary School, a Littleton Public School at 6900 South Elizabeth Street, Centennial, Colorado, is a neighborhood school conveniently located south of Arapahoe Road and east of University Boulevard. Its close proximity to Cherry Knolls Park with green space, walking path, stream and pond doubles as a huge backyard for physical education and science exploration.

Sandburg Elementary is fondly called “my school” by about 500 Preschool through 5th Grade students, their parents, and about 60 staff. Our school neighborhood prides itself on providing a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn since opening its doors in 1966. While about 75% of our students are from the Sandburg attendance area, including the surrounding neighborhoods of Cherry Knolls, The Knolls, Tiffany, Forest Park, Bristol Cove and Four Lakes, the other approximately 25% are open enrolled from areas around the Denver metro area. Most students who are continuing from Sandburg choose to attend Newton or Powell Middle School and then Arapahoe High School.

Our school follows a traditional school year from mid August to late May. We have a tradition of quality education supported by a highly qualified staff and high volunteerism through our PTO. Our state (CSAP) and national (ITBS and MAP) assessment rankings are high. Student to teacher ratios are low and we offer a wide variety of programs to meet the individual needs of our students.

In October 2005, our vision to enhance the role of technology and real world science exploration at our school was made a reality, thanks to a large district grant for the Sandburg Center for the Sciences. Our three kiva areas are centers for inquiry-based, hands-on learning through the use of technology and in partnerships with science outreach programs along the Front Range.

Professional Learning Community

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are in full swing at Sandburg. Our new LPS calendar provides time in a more evenly distributed manner—10 late start Wednesdays—for teachers to dialogue and collaborate on the progress of their students toward learning goals. Instead of a few inservice days spread far apart, these 2 hour blocks provide necessary time to make good instructional decisions based on their analysis of the data they’ve collected. Increased student achievement in keeping with our Districts Achievement Goals is our goal at Sandburg.

Check out how the Sandburg staff has used these PLC Days so far. PLC Days, while invaluable to our work, are in no way sufficient for us in meeting the individual needs of all students. In addition to the 10 PLC Days, teams of teachers (whole team and instructional level teams) meet during other times of the week—staff meeting time, teacher planning time, outside of the school day.

Snow Day?

No, kids, there's no snow day today. But it isn't too early to review LPS delay and closure procedures - before our first snow storm sneaks up on us. The District provides details of closure procedures and a list of media outlets listing closures. And during bad weather, closure information is always posted on the first page of the LPS web site.
